How can technology be
used most effectively to support and assess learning?
As
technology is becoming more advanced, it is becoming more important for
students to respond to technologies in social, economic and global education
settings. The process of learning can become richer as students have access to
a variety of technologies. It is essential that students develop critical
thinking skills in a preferably student-centered environments. Cooperative
learning, problem-based learning, design- based learning, productive
collaboration, and project-based learning can all challenge students in a
variety of ways to use activities to more deeply understand a subject. The new technology resources can be used as
incredible tools to facilitate these types of resources and also document the
work that has been done in means of assessment. Assessment can be more
comprehensive with multimedia, require student’s active participation, and
create electronic documents that can be easily accessed.
What are the
advantages and disadvantages of various technologies for particular types of
learning?
Advantages:
-
Assistive technology can improve usability or
enable independence for a
person with a disability or diverse
cultural background.
-
Students tend to be more motivated when
technology is integrated
-
It can increase peer or family involvement
-
Provide a plethora of informational resources
-
Improve school administration and management
with students
-
Be very helpful for visual and kinesthetic
learners
-
Students can learn how to organize, communicate
and problem solve in a different fashion.
Disadvantages:
-
Some students may not be exposed to computers
and other technology because of soio-economic status
-
Students can loos communication skills and
interactive abilities between students and teachers.
-
Kinethetic or auditory learners my have a difficult
time with a technology-based classroom
-
Teachers can depend too much on technology
-
Can hinder the opportunity to digest what has
been learned
PE and Health
Education specific:
In a PE setting, technology can be
integrated in unique ways. There are many options for students to use various
video game systems such as WII Fit, or DDR to learn more about being active. Also,
technology can be essential when a student is hearing impaired, or physically
disabled in a PE setting. Technology can modify activities for students to
participate in activities that they otherwise would not be able to.
The Internet is full of information
about various health topics that are very useful. Technologies can be great
resources for students to collaborate about what they like to do throughout the
day that is related to healthy eating, mental health, exercise, and other
topics. Although technology has the potential to shy away from face-to-face
interactions, it can be a great way to facilitate more collaboration among the
students, teachers, parents, and the community.
